At Smarter Communities, we care about the environment. We are only as healthy as our planet, and we all depend upon a healthy ecosystem for us to thrive.

World Environment Day is held every year on June 5. This year the international theme for World Environment Day (WED) is all about ecosystem restoration.

The United Nations is calling on us worldwide to start from the ground up. Activities such as planting a tree, cleaning our beaches and rivers, walking, riding bicycles and composting can make a significant difference to our environment.

Though we can’t go back in time to when the world was a greener place, we can make changes for the better now. And the best way to start each day in a sustainable way is to change our behaviours.

“2020 was a year of reckoning, facing multiple crises, including a global pandemic and the continued crises of climate, nature and pollution,” said Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

UNEP is the leading global voice on the environment. It provides leadership and encourages partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.

“In 2021, we must take deliberate steps to move from crisis to healing: and in so doing, we must recognise that the restoration of nature is imperative to the survival of our planet and the human race.”

For us living in apartments, there are many things we can do to make a solid contribution to restoring our ecosystem. And that starts with change.

We may not be able to plant trees like our single dwelling cousins, but we can change our behaviour and continue to make environmentally friendly choices.

We can consider buying sustainable products that support the environment instead of harming it. And we can encourage others to do the same. We can buy only what we need and eliminate waste going to landfill.

Did you know that food waste contributes to 14% of global carbon emissions? Not to mention how much food packaging clogs up landfill.

Every little bit helps and every contribution matters. Regardless how big or small. It’s never too late to start and a good time to start is this World Environment Day.
